Marking a momentous occasion in India’s history, Google Arts & Culture, in association with The Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation, the Abheraj Baldota Foundation, along with renowned Indian designer and textile revivalist Gaurang Shah, pay tribute to two stalwarts of Indian history - Mahatma Gandhi and Raja Ravi Varma. One was the Father of the Nation and the other can rightfully be called the Father of Modern Indian Art.
It is ironic to note that these two personalities, aside from their greatness, have something else in common - the date 2nd October. It marks not just the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, it also happens to be the death anniversary of Raja Ravi Varma.
Bringing together these two iconic figures, each epitomising strength, determination and dedication to their cause, Google Arts and Culture has come in to support The Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation, the Abheraj Baldota Foundation and Gaurang Shah, to present Khadi A Canvas.
This will be a first of its kind exhibition, slated to open on 2nd October 2019, to showcase iconic paintings by Ravi Varma recreated on a canvas of khadi. Not with a brush and paint, but through intricate Jamdani weaves on 300 count khadi saris.
