On 21st January 2019, The Raja Ravi Varma Heritage Foundation held its first outreach event outside of Bangalore. In association with the Department of Museum’s Tamil Nadu, the Foundation conducted a talk on ‘The Timeless Art of Raja Ravi Varma’.
Set in the lush, beautiful environs of the Government Museum Chennai, at the Centenary Hall, the talk was moderated by Foundation Managing Trustee and CEO Gitanjali Maini. She spoke to Chairperson Rukmini Varma on the timelessness of the artist’s work while referring to the four paintings from the museum’s collection that were put on display at the venue.
Mrs. Varma spoke about Ravi Varma’s use of colours, how he actualised art through his canvas and cited examples by pointing out certain aspects using the paintings on display.
This was followed by a short reading from Rukmini Varma’s ‘Hidden Truth, Raja Ravi Varma: The Inside Story’.
Being a first of its kind event in Chennai, the audience, all of who were fans of the artist’s work, were delighted to listen to his great great granddaughter speak so eloquently about his art and his style of work.
Ms. Kavitha Ramu (IAS) Director of Museums, Tamil Nadu, applauded the efforts of the foundation and suggested that more such academic events be conducted at the museum.
